"Something was happening that fall."

Dr. Daniela Panakova, Groupleader on Electrochemical Signaling in Development and Disease

As a 13-year-old girl, Daniela Panáková sensed that there was something going on in November 1989. Then there was the Gentle Revolution in Czechoslovakia. What did the previously unimagined freedom mean to hear as a student? And later as a scientist?

Daniela Panáková grew up in Czechoslovakia. She remembers the student's protests in the streets preceding the end of the socialist regime. Going to a grammar school under British governance in 1991, she discussed the values of democracy with her classmates and teachers. Today, she is the group leader of an international team of scientists working on "Electrochemical Signaling in Development and Disease."
