Award for Jens Reich - Scientist and Essayist

Professor Jens Reich, molecular biologist at the MDC in Berlin-Buch and co-founder of the civil rights movement "New Forum" in the former GDR is to receive the newly-endowed "Anna Krüger Prize of the Institute of Advanced Study of Berlin". Reich is the first recipient of this award, which is worth 50,000 German marks. Reich works at the MDC where he heads the "Bioinformatics" working group which deals with decoding of the human genome and its recording on a data base.

Professor Wolf Lepenies, principal of the Institute for Advanced Study of Berlin (Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin) said that Jens Reich was being honoured as a scientist and essayist "who reflects radical political change and his expectations of a future Europe in original, precise and vivid prose." The panel declared that Jens Reich's books, "The Return to Europe - a Report on the Position of the German Nation" (Munich 1991) and "The End of Living a Lie - the Intelligence and the Power" (Berlin 1992), had eamed themselves a special place amongst works about the process of German reunification.

The prize is named after Professor Anna Krüger (1904-1991) who taught on the didactic of German literature at the college of education at Weilburg-on-Lahn and the University of Giessen.

It was her intension to give new life to the quality of the language of science. She used her wealth to set up a fund from which, every second year, a scientist "who had managed to write an outstanding work in good, comprehensible scientific language" would be awarded the prize. The awarding body is the Institute of Advanced Study of Berlin.

The prize will be presented to Jens Reich at the beginning of the academic year 1993/94. The Institute has not yet fixed an exact date. Jens Reich will accord with the wishes of the donator by giving three lectures at the Science College.
